In a significant move to bolster maritime security and streamline trade operations, the UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has partnered with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) to launch the Satgate project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to leverage satellite and AI technologies to enhance the tracking of ships within UAE waters and ports.
The Satgate project, currently undergoing a two-month testing phase since June 2024, seeks to develop a comprehensive database of ships calling at UAE ports. This initiative is set to revolutionize maritime security by tracking vessels that are not connected to traditional tracking systems, such as those with AIS transponders turned off. This capability is crucial for maintaining the security of UAE's maritime facilities and coasts.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure emphasized that the new tracking system would significantly enhance maritime transport safety and efficiency. "Improving our tracking systems using advanced technology will enhance maritime transport and mitigate risks, which will contribute to increasing trade and transport traffic through UAE ports," said Al Mazrouei.
The Satgate project not only aims to boost economic growth through enhanced maritime security but also aligns with UAE’s sustainable development goals. Innovations in the maritime sector, such as this, help in preserving and developing the marine environment, thereby contributing to sustainable development.
Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chair of MBRSC, highlighted that the partnership would also extend to monitoring weather and marine conditions. This comprehensive approach ensures that the UAE can better manage and protect its maritime resources.
